So much of our understanding of the Civil War stems from battlefield exploits, or the military strategy behind them, or the politics behind the military strategy. Those were all the domain of men. It’s interesting to look behind that into what was going on with women during the bloody conflict, especially in a border state like Maryland, where your allegiance might be different than your neighbor’s, or your family's.
